In a market flooded with synthetic imitations and blended fabrics marketed as pure silk, the Silk Mark has become the most important trust signal for discerning buyers. Established by the Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI) under the Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, the Silk Mark is a certification label that guarantees the silk content of a product is genuine — protecting consumers from fraud and supporting authentic silk weavers across India.
The Silk Mark label is a small, tamper-proof tag affixed to the saree that contains a unique identification number, a QR code for verification, and the SMOI hologram. To earn this label, the fabric must pass rigorous laboratory testing conducted by SMOI-authorised centres. These tests analyse the fibre composition, confirming that the fabric is made from natural silk (mulberry, tussar, muga, or eri) and is free from synthetic blends. The testing also verifies the zari content — distinguishing between pure zari (with real gold or silver) and tested zari (a base metal alloy with gold coating) — so buyers know exactly what they are paying for.
Why does this matter so much? Because the price difference between genuine silk and a convincing polyester imitation can be tenfold, and the untrained eye cannot always tell them apart in a showroom. Synthetic sarees are often marketed with terms like "art silk," "fancy silk," or "silk blend" — terms that are deliberately vague and misleading. A Silk Mark certification eliminates this ambiguity entirely. When you see the Silk Mark, you know the fabric is pure silk, full stop. For high-value purchases like bridal Kanjivarams or heirloom pieces, this assurance is not a luxury — it is a necessity.
At NYSA SILK, every saree in our collection carries the Silk Mark certification. We go further by providing a detailed certificate of authenticity with each purchase that specifies the weave type, zari classification, silk grade, weight, and the weaving cluster of origin. We also include the weaver or loom cooperative information wherever possible, creating a transparent chain of provenance from loom to wardrobe. Our commitment to certification is not just about compliance — it is a reflection of our deep respect for the weavers whose livelihoods depend on the integrity of authentic silk commerce.
