The Kanchipuram Edit
The queen of South Indian silks. Woven in the temple town of Kanchipuram from pure mulberry silk and real zari, each piece carries the weight, lustre, and korvai borders that have defined bridal silk for generations.
Buyer’s Guide
A true Kanchipuram silk saree is not simply silk that happens to be woven in Kanchipuram. It is a particular craft: three separately woven sections — body, border, and pallu — joined by the interlocking korvai technique so the contrast border becomes one with the body without a single seam. That join, the dense hand of the silk, and genuine zari are what you are paying for.
At NYSA SILK we buy direct from the loom floor. Jaya carries forward her father’s fifty-five-year legacy in Dharmavaram silk — he began at fifteen and has spent his life among the weavers of the region. That relationship means we can stand behind the provenance of every Kanchipuram we list, and pass the saving from cutting out the showroom directly to you.
When you compare pieces, look first at the weight and the zari. Real gold or silver zari has depth and warmth; the saree should feel substantial in the hand. Every Kanchipuram we sell is Silk Mark certified by the Silk Mark Organisation of India, so authenticity is never left to guesswork.

A Kanchipuram (or Kanjivaram) silk saree is handwoven in the temple town of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, from pure mulberry silk and real zari. It is distinguished by its substantial body, contrasting korvai borders woven separately and interlocked by hand, and motifs drawn from South Indian temple architecture. It is widely regarded as the finest bridal silk in India.
Genuine Kanchipuram silk carries the Silk Mark hologram issued by the Silk Mark Organisation of India, has a noticeable weight from its dense weave, and shows the tell-tale korvai join where the contrast border meets the body. A pulled thread will burn to a fine ash with a singed-hair smell, never melting like a synthetic. Every NYSA SILK Kanchipuram is Silk Mark certified.
The price reflects pure mulberry silk, genuine gold or silver zari, and the weeks of work a master weaver invests in a single piece on a traditional pit loom. Heavier zari, finer counts of silk, and intricate pallu work all add to both the weight and the value. Because NYSA SILK buys direct from the Dharmavaram and Kanchipuram loom floor, you pay for the craft, not the showroom markup.
Dry clean only, and only when genuinely needed. Air the saree for a few hours after wearing, then fold it in soft muslin and store flat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Refold every three to six months to prevent permanent creases along the same lines, and never store in plastic, which traps moisture.
Heavier Kanchipuram silks with rich zari are made for weddings, receptions, and the most significant family ceremonies. Lighter pieces with restrained borders are beautiful for festivals, temple visits, and formal celebrations. A well-chosen Kanchipuram becomes an heirloom worn across a lifetime of occasions.
