Art silk, polyester, viscose and silk blends can look convincing in a photograph and even across a shop counter. The difference shows in the hand, in the light, and over years of wear — which is precisely when it is too late to discover it.
The good news: silk is a natural protein fibre, and it behaves in ways no synthetic can fully imitate. Learn four simple tests and you can read almost any saree. The science below is the same our quality team applies to every batch before we accept it.
The most decisive test. Pull a single thread from an inside seam and touch a flame to it. Pure silk smells of burning hair, self-extinguishes, and leaves a fine, crushable grey ash. A synthetic melts, shrinks away from the flame, smells of chemicals, and hardens into a brittle plastic bead.
Rub the fabric briskly between your palms. Genuine mulberry silk warms quickly to the touch — a property of the natural protein fibre. It has a subtle, living texture and a faint resistance. Synthetics stay cool, feel uniformly slippery, and can squeak slightly when rubbed.
Tilt the saree under changing light. Pure silk reveals a deep, shifting iridescence — it appears to change colour as the angle moves, because each triangular fibre refracts light differently. Synthetic sheen is flat, white-bright and unchanging, the same from every angle.
Silk has a distinct weight-to-drape relationship: it falls in fluid, sculptural folds rather than stiff, springy ones. We weigh every saree against established benchmarks for its weave type — a deviation signals impure yarn, adulteration, or a synthetic blend.
A handwoven silk shows tiny, honest irregularities — slight variations in the weft, hand-tied thread joins on the reverse, and a selvedge that is firm but never machine-perfect. A power-loom or synthetic piece is flawlessly uniform on both faces. Turn the saree over: the reverse of a true zari border still shows the metal thread, not a printed imitation.
Pure mulberry silk and real zari cost what they cost. If a heavy "Kanchipuram silk" is priced like a printed polyester, the cloth is telling you the truth the label is hiding. Genuine handloom silk reflects the silk, the zari, and the weeks of a weaver's labour — there is a floor below which it cannot honestly fall.
Certification
The Silk Mark is a quality assurance label promoted by the Central Silk Board under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. It guarantees that a product is made of pure natural silk — the single most trustworthy third-party verification available to a buyer.
