For NRIs living in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and beyond, purchasing a genuine handloom silk saree from India and having it shipped safely to your doorstep involves several considerations — from customs regulations to packaging integrity. At NYSA SILK, we ship to over 30 countries and have refined our international shipping process to ensure your silk arrives in perfect condition, every single time.
Customs duties and import taxes vary by country. In the United States, handloom textiles from India valued under $800 per shipment generally enter duty-free under the de minimis threshold. For higher-value purchases, the standard duty rate for silk textiles is approximately 1.5 to 4 percent, though exact rates depend on the Harmonized Tariff Schedule classification. In the United Kingdom, the import duty on silk textiles is typically around 8 percent, plus 20 percent VAT on the total value including shipping. NYSA SILK includes detailed customs declarations with every international order, specifying the saree as a handloom silk garment with its exact value and country of origin — this transparency helps ensure smooth customs clearance and avoids unnecessary delays.
Packaging is critical when shipping silk internationally. Every NYSA SILK saree is folded with acid-free tissue paper between layers to prevent colour transfer and creasing. The saree is then placed in a muslin dust bag, followed by a rigid corrugated box to protect against compression during transit. For orders over a certain value, we use tamper-evident packaging with tracking at every stage. We strongly advise against vacuum-sealing silk for international shipment — while it saves space, the compression can permanently crease the zari work and flatten the texture of the weave.
Delivery timelines depend on the service selected. Our standard international shipping via tracked courier typically takes 7 to 12 business days to the USA and UK. Express shipping reduces this to 3 to 5 business days. All international orders include full insurance coverage against loss or damage during transit, and our customer care team provides real-time tracking updates from dispatch to delivery. For NRI brides ordering bridal sarees, we recommend placing orders at least 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding date to allow time for any blouse stitching, alteration, or customs processing.
